March Events at BFPL
Greetings!
This month we have several special events.
March 12th, 6 - 7pm, Len Schmidt will be presenting “A Brief Look at the past 1.3 Billion Years in Brandon’s Natural History”, a focus on why this place is so unique and how it is constantly changing.
March 19th, 6 - 7pm. Local author Angel Lee will be here signing copies of her debut novel “Kindling”. An adult dark fantasy novel of Magick, enemies to lovers, and high-stakes action.
March 20th, 5:30 - 7pm, Cook Book Club. Come in before the 19th, pick a recipe and bring a dish to share.
March 26th, 6 - 7pm, Endangered Alphabets. What does the age of digital convergence, Facebook, and globalization mean for the future of the written word? Writer/carver/painter Tim Brookes from Vermont Humanties offers remarkable and thought-provoking perspective on this question by looking at a range of forms of writing from all over the world that are in danger of extinction.
He displays a carving of a piece of text in each script, leading a discussion on how technology will help—and always has helped—define the nature of communication, and shows how the story of a culture can be seen in its writing, even if that writing is (as in these examples) beautiful, utterly unfamiliar, and disappearing.
March 27th, 5 - 7pm, Letterpress Printing. Experience the art first-hand and chat with John from Revolutionary Press.
April 1st, 6 - 7pm, Serious Reads Book Talk. “The Friday Afternoon Club” by Griffin Dunne. A memoir that embraces the poignant absurdities and best and worst efforts of its loveable, infuriating, funny, and moving characters—its author most of all. (Copies available)
April 2nd, 6 - 7pm, Fun Reads Book Talk. “Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries.” Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar, and a meticulous researcher, but Emily Wilde is not good at people. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, muddle Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her. But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she’ll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all—her own heart. (Books available soon)
